Alice Halicka (1895-1975)

Alice Halicka (1895–1975) was a Polish-born French painter and designer associated with the Cubist movement. Born in Kraków, she studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków and later in Munich and Paris, where she became part of the vibrant artistic circles of Montparnasse. Halicka married fellow artist Louis Marcoussis, and together they engaged with avant-garde art and intellectual life.

Her work encompassed painting, collage, textile design, and set decoration, often characterised by delicate colour palettes, geometric forms, and a poetic sensibility. She contributed to ballet and theatre productions, including designs for Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes. Halicka also illustrated books and created decorative works that blended Cubism with a lyrical, narrative style. Her artistic voice remained distinct and personal, offering a feminine perspective within the modernist movements of early 20th-century Europe.
