Louise Janin (1893-1997)
Louise Janin (1893–1997) was an American-born painter and mystical artist who spent much of her life in France. Born in California, she studied art in San Francisco before traveling extensively, eventually settling in Paris, where she became part of the interwar avant-garde scene. Janin’s work was deeply influenced by her spiritual interests, drawing from Eastern religions, esotericism, and symbolism.
Her paintings often featured visionary landscapes, abstracted cosmic forms, and themes of transcendence and unity. With a palette rich in luminous colors and a style that blended Symbolism, Surrealism, and Asian artistic traditions, Janin developed a unique visual language aimed at expressing the metaphysical. Over her remarkably long life—she lived to be 104—she remained committed to exploring the intersection of art and spirituality, creating works that sought to reveal hidden dimensions of consciousness and the universe.
