Paula Rego currently has her first ever museum show in Germany, at the Kestner Gesellschaft in Hanover (until January 29th) and also in Turkey at the Pera Museum in Istanbul (until 30th April).

🗣️« While Paula Rego belatedly was recognised as one of the leading feminist pioneers of her age, little has been written about her exploration of fluid sexuality. Indeed the current of sado-masochism in her drawings and paintings, has tended to encourage an understanding as a classic clash between the patriarchy and exploited women. Her first museum exhibitions in Turkey and Germany show that she had a far more fluid appreciation of gender and identity than which she has been credited… »

❓ ⭐️ Did you know that Amelia Peláez (1896-1968) was one of Cuba’s foremost modernist painters?

⭐️ This painting, titled "Olimpia" (1955), is a response to Manet's famous "Olympia" which Peláez saw at the Louvre (where it then hung) when she lived in Paris between 1927 - 34.

❓ Can you spot any major differences between Peláez's and Manet's versions:

1) Instead of a bouquet of flowers, Peláez' servant figure holds a platter of tropical fruit.

2) Peláez' reclining figure is clothed and seated on a dais embroidered with traditional Cuban lace.

3) Peláez’s reclining figure does not engage the viewer with her gaze, but rather looks elsewhere.

🗣️ “I am not interested in copying", Peláez once said. "What matters is the relation of the motif with oneself, with one’s personality, and the power the artist has to organize his emotions.”

Did you know British abstract artist Paule Vézelay (1892-1984) is represented in the RAW collection with five major works?

🥇Paysage, Three Horses, 1929

🥈L’Animal, 1929

🥉Lines in Space, No. 42, 1964

Head over to our website to find the 4th & 5th ones!

Closely associated with André Masson (1896–1987) (with whom she lived in Paris for four years), Jean Arp (1886–1966), Sophie Taeuber-Arp (1889–1943) and Alberto Giacometti (1901 – 1996). By the early 1930s Vézelay’s work had become increasingly abstract, and she joined Abstraction-Création in 1934. One of only a few British members, she was committed to international, non- representational art. She returned to London at the outbreak of WWII and experimented with new artistic forms, including reliefs, painting and textiles, some of which were shown at the Grosvenor Gallery in 1968. A retrospective exhibition of her work was held at the Tate Gallery in 1983.

"The Bridge" (1930) is probably Dorrit Black's best-known painting. Painted in luminous colours, it depicts Sydney Harbour Bridge in construction, and is considered to be Australia's first cubist landscape.
